Response to misleading ABC reporting on historic Adani Group correspondence
We have issued the following media statement in response to an article published by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) online and on ABC television and radio on 4/5/23.
The following is attributable to an Adani Group spokesperson:
“We are disappointed that the ABC has conflated the content of old letters with the Adani Group’s current business position on Myanmar to suggest we have misled the international community.
“Adani Power Limited and Adani Transmission Limited do not conduct business in Myanmar and have no interest in doing so. Any rumourmongering or suggestion otherwise by the ABC or others is unfounded and incorrect.
“Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has publicly announced it will exit its investment in the Yangon International Terminal project in a way that ensures the asset cannot be used unethically or to compromise the human rights of the Myanmar people.
“The process to divest from the project began in 2021 following the military coup in Myanmar, which APSEZ condemned. APSEZ continues to work through the divestment process with the diligence and care the circumstances require.
“Since APSEZ won the Yangon International Terminal project in 2020, the goal was to build critical infrastructure that would create local jobs and contribute towards the nation’s economic and social development goals. APSEZ rejects any insinuations on its motivations, lack of ethics or that the project was in breach of Australian, US, UN, or other international sanctions.
“APSEZ also strongly rejects any suggestion from the ABC that its dealings with Siemens have not been appropriate or ethical.”
